Monday 1st to Saturday 6th October 2012. Eyre Peninsula SA.

Three gorgeous days at Streaky Bay was a great way to get us over the hump of our 5 day Nullarbor drive and bad colds we had picked up along the way. The beach, the sun and the warmth was just so lovely and relaxing. I think I am now addicted to sunshine though...because after so much rain in the South West, I noticed how much the sun made me feel so good again, which is a bit of a worry thinking about returning to Melbourne!

The pelicans are very friendly around these parts, and we would get big groups of them frequent the beach at the van park, especially if someone was cleaning a fish! There are some cute old buildings in the bay, dating back to 1800s, and lots of oysters! (A pity we don't like them enough to appreciate the local produce.) We enjoyed walks along the foreshore to town, relaxing in the sun, finding friends in the playground and chatting to our caravaning neighbours. No sightseeing or driving for these 3 days!

Today, we head across the Eyre Peninsula to Whyalla for a few days. We have decided to skip driving down to Port Lincoln, to which diehard South Aussies say is just terrible, but we are lacking the motivation at the moment to see yet another port and another surf coast.

We stopped Wednesday night in Kimba at the showgrounds, pacing ourselves a bit while all still trying to recover from colds. Kimba is a tiny town with more flies than people and home to the Giant Galah. It is also exactly halfway across Australia!
They were actually getting ready for their show that weekend and asked us if we were going to stay, but we thought we might move out before the cows moved in, considering the fly population already! Kimba has 4 freecamping spots in town and encourages their use which says heaps for their country hospitality!

On Thursday, we drive to Whyalla and stop at Pt Lowly, a beautiful spot on the other side of the Peninsula, overlooking the water and York Peninsula on the other side. It is a steamy day when we arrive, so we are glad for the cold showers and a dip in the ocean even, our first dip since Coral Bay WA! The flies are just as bad here, and we are starting to wonder about SA. I haven't seen them this bad since Central Australia!
The following day is much cooler and the flies aren't as bad. We take a walk to the lighthouse and are blessed to see dolphins playing in the shallows and a row of Albatroses watching them! Pretty funny!

On Saturday, we leave Pt Lowly after a stormy, windy night, and drive to Port Augusta for lunch. A town full of character with its wharf, port and restored stone buildings in its centre. Then through green farmlands framed by the Flinders Ranges and onto Redhill, a tiny town with similar stone buildings still all in use dating back to the 1800s! Here we stay the night before heading into Adelaide for a week to explore some more...
