Staying at Cleaverville beach for a few days before heading further south, meant we could both enjoy this spectacular spot and stay on the North West Coastline until today to try and capture the Staircase to the Moon. It is a phenonomen quite famous in Broome, but can also be seen at other points down the West Coast as far as Karratha, when the full moon rises above low tide mudflats, creating the staircase. It is only for 3 nights each month, so you need to time your visit and spot to watch from carefully.
We chose to drive just up the road to Cossack, where you can watch from Settlers Beach. We spent our afternoon looking around Cossack first at some of the gorgeous restored Iron Stone buildings restored around the town. Cossack became a ghost town after pearling died there before the war, but they have now restored parts of the town for tourism.
We then headed out to Settlers beach and the kids could swim and play here as its a protected bay (from sharks and other nasties on most of the West Coastline). They found lots of crabs, snails and sea cucumbers and urchins to play with in the shallow pools left by low tide, and lots of mud! As the sun started setting we cooked kangaroo burgers for tea, then got cameras ready for the famous moon rising. It was absolutely beautiful to watch, and so difficult to completely capture on camera, and nice to watch here just with one other couple, rather than fighting for a camera spot in Broome!
