What an amazing little town! So much to experience in such a little, remote place. We set up our freecamp down at Long Waterhole, a pretty, quiet spot about 2km out of Winton. No loos or showers or water, so you need to be very self-sufficient, but fun to do some real camping with campfires and all!
Saturday was spent setting up, then wandering into town to check out the info centre and sights. Winton is the home of the first rendition of Waltzing Matilda, so they have made a Museum out of it and we found it a fantastic centre where we learnt a lot of Banjo, the region and the song. There was so much to the centre that we returned the next morning to finish. We stopped to eat lunch and check out Arno's Wall, an interesting way to use your junk!
On Sunday afternoon we drove out to Age of Dinosaurs Fossil Preparation Facility, where we met Banjo, a locally found dinosaur and some of his mates also found in the region. This was facinating and well worth the trip. We finished the day with a campfire, cooking marshmellows and checking out the amazing stars!
Monday morning we set off early for Lark Quarry, about 100km out of Winton on gravel and red bulldust road-not one for the lighthearted! We were on a mission though, to see some dinosaur footprints! Apparently a dinosaur stampede had occurred out here and the thousands of footprints had fossilised and been preserved. Well, it was quite breathtaking to see and well worth the bulldust! What an amazing amount of learning the kids have had in a few short days! We drove back to Winton after picnicking at Lake Quarry amongst the magnificient countryside, vastly different to what we had seen so far. A quick look at the Open Air Theatre with the Worlds Largest Deckchair ended the day and we had another quiet night at the campfire under the stars, cooking dinner and marshmellows this time, savouring our good memories of Winton.
Off to continue the Dinosaur trail tomorrow...
