Because Jasine and Dwaynes birthdays and 18th Wedding Anniversary all fall over Easter weekend we decided to give our family an early present of a special trip to Green Island to see some of the beautiful Great Barrier Reef while we were on its doorstep.
We were very blessed to have a fine day to go considering we are only just coming out of the wet season, however it was very windy! This wasn't too much of a problem except for the trip over being quite rough due to the windy conditions! We did okay, but were all feeling pretty queasy by the time we saw Green Island (and not a minute too soon as Dwayne inparticular was also looking quite green!) but we made it without 'feeding any fishes'. (Which is more than we can say for all the Big Cat travellers!)
On arrival to the Island, we relaxed and walked the boardwalk and beautiful beach areas, the kids loving the fact that they could boast walking from one end of an Island to the other! (We won't tell anybody it is only about a km long!)
We went back to the Big Cat for our buffet lunch on board which was pretty scrumptious and delighted the kids that they could choose what they wanted on their plates. After lunch we hopped onto the glass bottom boat for a 1/2 hour look at the reef. Even though it was a bit greener today due to the winds, we were still lucky enough to see some beautiful corals, fish,a reef shark, clams and a green sea turtle!
We stepped off this boat and into the semi-submersible boat (a submerine type boat with glass walls) where we saw similar scenes from a slightly different point of view including fishfeeding from above, causing the huge schools of fish to swim right past our glass walls! I must admit though that the semi sub didn't do much for my stomach post lunch, but the kids loved it!
A little bit of shopping finished off our day on Green Island and we enjoyed our windy trip back to Cairns much more after being much better prepared and taking the complimentary ginger tablets and staying on the top deck in the fresh air! A special little extra event for the kids was being invited to sit in the Captains chair and steer on the trip back...pretty special. A super day and so amazing again to experience more of Gods creation our very own beautiful reef.
